What does the IP ratings of Water-Proof and Dust-proof of mobiles mean?

Sony opened this year by launching its Beauty and Beast Sony xperia Z with water and dust resisting powers. Xperia Z was not the first phone to equip the water and dust resistance feature but it brought a new trend of resistivity for phones. The Samsung's not so beautiful beast Samsung Galaxy S4's successor Samsung Galaxy S4 Active is now ready to compete with the Sony Xperia Z.

Sony Xperia Z and Samsung Galaxy S4 Active have IP57 and IP67 ratings respectively. But what does it mean?

IP - Ingress Protection, or International Protection, which is a rating system that defines how well an enclosure protects its internal electric equipment, such as the internal hardware of a smartphone, against environmental factors such as dust and rain.

An IP rating is associated with 2 digits - The first digit refers to protection against the Solid objects like fingers, tools, wires, small wires, and dust. The second digit refers to protection against water intrusion. The tables below gives detailed explanation of each number.

4Protection against solid objects greater than 1mm in diameter, such as wires
5Limited protection against dust, that is, no harmful deposit
6Complete protection of dust

The second digit
